Summer of Hip Therapy & Bad Eating

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

We’ve been so busy this spring and summer. It looks like fall and winter are shaping up to be just as, if not more, hectic. Obviously posting and making cooking videos have taken a back seat. But my cameraman/editor husband and I are fine. We’re just super busy.

This spring we made the decision to put a hold on making new videos. A big work project landed on my husband’s lap that demanded all of his time spent on filming and editing our videos. The project’s end date was late August…but here we are in September and it is still rolling along. Now it’s looking like the end date is closer to November/December.

As for me, the one word to describe the past 8 months is “frustration.” My unstable hip dominates everything I do.  For months on end sitting, standing, stretching, walking or rolling over in bed caused intense pain. It’s been difficult to do basic things like cooking, cleaning, walking to the mailbox, or grocery shopping. I found if I sat for more than 30 minutes I wouldn’t be able to walk more than a foot or two without risk of falling.

No matter the amount of physical therapy or stretching “3 times a day,” it just felt like my hip muscles were getting pulled into a tighter ball instead of lengthening.  I know my orthopedic doctor warned me it would take about 18 months to stabilize the hip. But patience with one’s self goes out the window when you’re use to physically doing what you want when you want.

Rather than being patient with myself and having that laser-focus on my health, self-pity won out this summer. So rather than focusing my time on getting healthy I went back to my old bad eating habits.

To say my carb count “crept up” is putting it mildly. There were days (most) I ate like the old 300+ lbs. me, and days where I was strictly keto (far too few).

So this summer I added a lot more weight…and didn’t care. I was too busy feeling sorry for myself.  I knew what I was doing was wrong and frankly, stupid. But as they say, you need to hit bottom before you turn your life around.

It wasn’t until August that my hip started really responding to therapy. I became more mobile and flexible. The pain isn’t constant. For now it feels like I’m over a hump. My trainer recently cleared me for biking and interval running. That’s huge!

And sure enough, around the same time that mental funk started lifting too. I’m starting to eat out less, cutting back on alcohol, and making better food choices.  In September I decided to do another keto reset (for the zillionth time…but whose really counting) with a 30-day challenge.

Since I’m on a video hiatus, I decided to go back to where it all began for me…this blog. I’ll try to do 1-2 posts a week. The posts will focus on my reset — the successes and failures.

  1. Hi Dot,
Just found you. I think you speak for most women with ups and downs in diet, but you have a strong “never give up” attitude that’s inspirational. If someone blows the diet one day, next day just dust yourself off and begin Day 1 again. I eat a modified keto, leaning towards Atkins diet. I do intermittent fasting (that is a big key – I think). There is no one size fits all. Mix it up. Try different ways of eating. Experimenting is a good thing. It keeps my interest, anyway, in the journey. Looking forward to your next post. Anna

    Hi Dot
Nice to see you after a long time. Can i ask specifically if you had your vitamin D3 checked? Hope your hip feels better soon.
    X
I had mine done and it was low. I had some supplements and feel a better.
I googled after and Dr Berry did a utube vidio on it.
I guess the government put it in those horrible *Carbage* foods (Dr Berry word) and grains for a reason.
Which obviously we don’t eat much of any more.
Love your blog vlog what evers going …. Thanks

    • Dot2Trot

Joss, good point on D. My Vitamin D use to be low before I started this journey back in 2012. After a year I finally got my levels up to the bare minimum for health and kept up with taking my supplement. Unfortunately over the last 8 months I haven’t been as good with it. I had blood work done in February and D was barely OK but lower than when I was at my healthiest. So yes, I’m taking my D along with MK-2 (which helps your body absorb D). I do blood work in October.

Ohhh Dot, What a nice surprise to receive a notification from your blog today. And you know what? Yesterday, before going to bed, I was reading the new magazine “The Keto Diet” (Woman’s world) and what a nice surprise I had when I saw your beautiful picture in this pretty blue dress 👗💙 Seeing you with this beautiful smile that reminded me of how much your videos, your delicious recipes and your sweetness I missed. I read with pleasure the article which was devoted to you, and I sincerely wish to see you again soon. So imagine my surprise today !! My wish have been granted ✨💫🌟 What! OMG she’s back lordy lord there was so long …. I knew you were suffering from the hip and I know how it can become painful and contraingnant. When the machine breaks down it is almost impossible to find a so-called quality of life.
But what’s nice with you Dot, you know how to surprise and spoil your fans with all that inspires you and makes a WOW in your life. You’re ready to get back on track with a nice improvement of your hip and new projects that gives you the taste gradually to find you close to your fans who have always believed in women like you Dot: strong, Determined, courageous, lighted, bold and more. Thank you for this wonderful gift and look forward to reading you soon 🙋💝

Kristyne, you caught me in the wild! I did the photo shoot in November for that article (a lot of outside shoots and it was the coldest day too). Thank you so much for your comments. I hope to blog regularly since we can’t do videos at the moment. So you’ll know the trials and tribulations of my reset. Again, thank you for your very kind words.

  9. Suzanne T Zoll

Glad Im not the only one with struggles–mine not with health issues, but with travel, and family visits etc and both my husband and I put weight back on again. We have crawled back on the wagon again as well. So nice to have you back. and hopefully your blogs will help me stay on track!

    • Dot2Trot

Hey Suzanne, we are only human which means no such thing as perfection, especially when it comes to diet. It’s always best to get back on track than not even making the attempt. Thank you and we’ll get back on track together.

  12. Jackie

I saw this email today and I about jumped out of my chair with JOY. I was so happy to hear anything from you. Glad you are back at it, know I will be following along trying to lose a bit of weight. I have a long way to go, but I too am back. 🙂

  13. Cheryl Berkey

Hi Dot, I’m so glad to hear from you. I suggest you get in a pool. Move around without swimming. Move your arms around while keeping your feet planted. All the stretching will be wonderful for you. Just think of stretching your ankles, then your calves, then your thighs, then your shoulders. Just some advise from a retired therapist. You’ve helped me so much, is like to help you.

  14. Theresa Casselman

Hi I am so glad you posted. We all been where you are. I gained back half of the 60 pounds I lost dealing with divorce and what have you and I have been doing a good about of self-pity eating myself. Life can really through you curveballs:(

  18. Natalie Oramas

Hi Dot, thank you for your sincere sharing. Please be gentle with yourself and don’t get caught up with what you feel might have been a setback. We all go through these trying times and most of the time come out better in the long run. Stay strong and know that we care about you and wish you the very best on this your journey to better health. I am in your corner and will be sending you energetic love and healing.

    • Dot2Trot

Hi Natalie! I’m being gentle, yet firm with myself 🙂 And I’m happy to say that the healthy-focused Dot is back with abandon.

  19. Hello Dot,

It is so good to have you back. You have helped a lot of people since you first started on this quest. However, the person with whom it is the hardest to have patience with… Is yourself.

I have gone up and down in weight over the years but now find it difficult to even lose a little. I am sure that it is because I am older and my metabolism has changed. I used to be very active and now I am mostly sedentary. That has to change. Whatever I am able to do, I MUST do.

I did a little calculating and figured that for me to lose I have to get down closer to 16 carbs a day. That is hard to do and get in the needed nutrition. So some days I am Keto and some days I am low calorie but not watching the carbs. I understand your frustration. Please just hang in there and you will start dropping the pounds again and letting us all see your sweet smile.

    Take care,
    Glenda

    • Dot2Trot

Glenda, you are right, moving is a must! And awesome that you figured out your carb level. I’m working on that this week! Thank you.

  20. Hey Dot, I’m in the same boat. Not with the hip replacement, but my hips are still really tired when I stand for any length of time.

One thing I pursued, was getting a garden plot at the local community garden. I’m still clearing the land, and it’s a big job. Even so, just making myself walk over there every day is a challenge. The heat drops me to the floor!

Needless to say, my entire routine is messed up. I’ve been getting up really early to beat the heat, and while my routine is still a bit unsettled, it’s getting better. And I feel better, too.

I’ll miss the videos, but accountability is a big deal. I look forward to your progress – in any direction. Good to see you back.

  21. Cindy Szatkowski

My dear Dot, I have missed you! Your health and getting back on track are the most important things and I am quite willing to wait for you to get back to us when you are feeling better and have more time. I have been worried about your mom during the summer and hope things are going well for her too. You are such a wonderful inspiration to me and look forward to your blogs until you are able to do videos again. Your journey of reclaiming your health at this point is an important story to tell. Hugs C

    • Dot2Trot

Cindy, thank you so much. My sister has been a huge help with my mom. As you can imagine, breaking a hip twice in a 6 month span has taken it’s toll. So it is nice that my sister and I can tag team and help her out. Again thank you for the wonderful comment and hugs back at ya!

  22. Erin

Thank you for posting Dot! I’ve been wondering what happened:I so totally hear you being in the same journey myself. After loosing over 100 lbs I’ve been struggling back and forth since January of this year (2019) I too am on the the zillionith retry, but I will never give up. Where there is life there’s hope:)
