Texans Love Coffee Creamers!

Wow…that’s a lot of coffee creamers!

A little photo I snapped while visiting a local Houston grocery store. I waited for about 5 minutes before snapping this photo. The constant stream of Texans picking out their favorite creamer blocked my view.  My grocery store only sells 4 creamer flavors. I don’t know what they are as I don’t use the stuff. Too much sugar for me. I prefer full-fat heavy cream for my java.

Curiosity got the better of me and I had to look. So many flavors — Coconut Creme, Creme Brulee, Extra Sweet & Creamy, Girl Scouts’ Thin Mints, Peppermint Mocha, Nestle Tollhouse Snickerdoodles, La Lechera Dulce de Leche, and so much more. Read More

What The Heck Is Ketosis & Why Should I Care?

No trace of ketones...not surprising after my anniversary weekend. But now it's time to become a fat-burning machine.

No trace of ketones…not surprising after my anniversary weekend. But now it’s time to become a fat-burning machine.

When starting my low carb diet more than 2 years ago, I kept hearing about “being in ketosis.” I tried reading up on ketosis, but for some reason my brain just translated all the info as blah blah blah. Instead, I focused my attention on just trying to eat right, thinking I’d learn more about this mystery topic later on.

Well, for the last couple of months, my weight’s bounced back and forth between 203 and 210. Frustrated, I decided to reach out to a few folks I know who eat low carb. Sure enough, all of them asked me if I was in ketosis.

Crap! I thought. I guess “later on” means now.

I picked up some Ketostix at the pharmacy to measure my ketone production. Oh great, so now I need to pee on a stick in the morning! Read More

Welcome To The Low Carb Party, Time Magazine!

Kudos to Time Magazine for doing some actual reporting! Saturated fat isn't the enemy. It's what's replaced it in our diet that's making us fat.

Kudos to Time Magazine for doing some real reporting! Saturated fat isn’t the enemy. It’s what’s replaced it in our diet that’s making us fat.

This made my afternoon! Time Magazine actually has a cover story going after one of the biggest nutrition mistakes of the last 40+ years – saturated fat is bad. Fat is not the enemy. It’s what we replaced saturated fat with — carbs and heavily processed foods – that’s making us fatter and sicker.

Since the government decided to conduct a nationwide experiment on us in the 70s, we’ve packed on the pounds and diabetes went up a whopping 157%. Why? Because they pounded into to us to reach for low-fat, high-carb, “heart-healthy,” crappy processed foods and not real, whole foods like eggs, beef, butter and milk.

Unfortunately, most of the story is behind a pay wall, but be sure to check out the video at the link. It is spot on. More people need to see this.

Also, while this Time Magazine video doesn’t mention Gary Taubes, I hope they do in the article (yes, I have to go to a store to buy a print versionhow last century is that?). This was the point of his great book, Why We Get Fat. A lot of nutritionists and weight loss gurus owe this man a big apology!

Help spread the word!
