Why You Should Ignore The New Dietary Guidelines

The new federal dietary guidelines are about to come out, but the fight over the bad science used to create them is still raging.

The new federal dietary guidelines are about to come out, but the fight over the bad science used to create them is still raging.

It’s about time.

It seems that every 5 years the federal government rolls out the new dietary guidelines with hardly any criticisms. Sure you’d hear them from the various food special interest groups worried about sales, but very little about whether the recommendations actually work.

How times have changed.

Two articles, in as many days, both from The Washington Post, question the science the US federal government uses in developing the soon to be released 2015 guidelines. Read More

Weekly Weigh-In: Down 1 lbs.

I've lost 1 of the 3 pounds I gained from my Texas trip. With all my upcoming travel, I'm shooting for holding steady.

I’ve lost 1 of the 3 pounds I gained from my Texas trip. With all my upcoming travel, I’m shooting for holding steady.

After gaining a few pounds from my Texas trip, I’m slowly getting back into my normal routine. I’m down 1 lbs. this week. We’ll see if my weight loss picks up, but with a road trip with mom starting Wednesday and a weekend trip with the hubby the following week, I’m not so sure.

My routine officially gets back to normal mid-October. So I’m going to shoot for no gains.

Roasted Garlic – Keto Style

I'm loving The Ketogenic Cookbook. I picked roasted garlic as the first recipe to try. Easy to make, I'll use all of the garlic pictured over the next few days.

While flipping through The Ketogenic Cookbook I was trying to decide which recipes to try first. Turns out nearly every recipe I picked called for roasted garlic, one of the first recipes listed in the book.

As much as I love garlic I never tried roasting a whole bulb. This one calls for an even dozen. Why so much? Apparently you can preserve roasted garlic in the freezer. Who knew?

I don’t know why I never tried roasting garlic before. The recipe is so simple to follow. The garlic tastes amazing. Plus you’ll love the fragrance that fills your kitchen.

Cooking With MCT
The big surprise for me with this recipe was the use of MCT oil. For some reason I viewed MCT oil as something I use when making my morning Bulletproof Coffee. I never thought of using it in cooking. Silly Rabbit! Read More

Weekly Weigh-In: Down 5 Pounds!

A big drop in weight this week! While I haven't measured my ketones, I'm pretty confident I'm in ketosis and am a fat burning mama!

A big drop in weight this week! While I haven’t measured my ketones, I’m pretty confident I’m in ketosis and am a fat burning mama!

While I expected a loss this morning when I stepped on the scale, I was completely shocked that it was that big. At this point in my weight loss journey, I’m lucky if I lose 1/2 a pound in a week. But 5 pounds? Woohoo!

Clearly my decision to move towards a ketogenic diet is paying off. And so are those Julia Child recipes.

My daily caloric intake is about 70-75% fat. Not only do I have more energy than before, but it feels like I can focus a lot easier on my various projects. I suspect I’ve reached ketosis and am now a fat burning machine.

I don’t expect another 5 lbs. drop next Saturday. The big drop just means the scale is finally reflecting the changes in my body measurements. If I can stay in ketosis, I expect more fat loss, just not as large as this week’s.

“If You’re Afraid Of Butter, Use Cream!”

I'm discovering the wonderful recipes of Julia Child. After 30+ years of listening to the low-fat nonsense, I'm taking my healthy eating to a new level of awesomeness! Image source: www.foodrenegade.com.

As I continue my quest for that ketosis sweet spot, my greatest challenge is getting enough healthy fat each day. I’m aiming for 75% of my daily calories to come from fat. With my low carb way of eating, I average 65% fat each day (for the uninitiated, that doesn’t mean I’m deep-frying foods!). Scanning lots of low-carb, high fat (LCHF) sites, one name kept popping up over and over:
