Finished my 2nd 5K of the year. Two more 5Ks in October. In November I reach my goal of 5 races with the Color Run in Baltimore.

One of my weight loss goals this year is to walk in gobs of 5K races (OK, 5 total) and today I did my 2nd race of the year – The Navy Federal Credit Union 5K.

I didn’t think I’d actually make it to the race since I only slept for 3 hours last night.

Thankfully my husband called to wish me luck (working at the office all night, he couldn’t make the race to cheer me on). When I told him my plight, he encouraged me to fight through the drowsiness and do the walk.

And so I did.

This 5K felt more challenging than the one I did back in March. And it wasn’t just sleep deprivation. Nope, it was the hills…lots and lots of hills along today’s route…and the 80+ temperatures at the start. Not that it stopped me from going way to fast at the start.

After walking my first hill, the thought of going fast got knocked right out of me.

Overall, I ended up about 2 minutes behind my time of the first 5K. Damn hills!

Hats off to the race organizer who picked the route. Most of it passed through older neighborhoods with big beautiful homes and equally large, stunning trees. The last mile the route left the road in favor of a pretty and quiet bike path in the woods.

The prize for not coming in last? No, just a nice snack that I'll burn off fairly quickly.

I did take home a prize…well not really. Just a banana. I needed a snack so I scooped this one up along with a 1/4 slice of a bagel. I figured it’ll burn off fairly quickly.

So just 3 more races to go. I’m walking in 2 races in October and I reach my 5K goal with the November Color Run in Baltimore. I’m excited about all of them, but especially the Color Run – it just looks fun.

  1. Great job! Get used to not sleeping before races. I rarely do now, convinced I’ll miss my alarm and the race. Just have some coffee (and then water, then a bathroom trip!) and go with it.

  2. Congrats on this 5k! It’s ok that you were 2 minutes behind your other 5k time – All those hills and sleep deprivation both probably played big roles. The best part is that you still did it!
