Is There Really A Link Between Fat And Heart Disease?

A new study sheds light on the truth about saturated fat and heart disease.

If you read my blog, it’s no secret that I’m not a fan of the last 50+ years of nutrition science (dogma) that says a high-carb, low-fat diet is best for us.  That thinking is what helped me top the scales at 325 pounds before I started questioning the mainstream thinking.

While serious science is now starting to look at the role carbs play in making us fat, a new study questions the paranoia surrounding saturated fat.

We’ve been told that saturated fat in butter, cheese and meat causes heart disease. But scientists looking at 80 studies involving 500,000 people and 27 randomized controlled trials (the gold standard in research) found no evidence that saturated fat causes heart problems or any benefits from other types of fats.

It’s time for nutritionists and the food industry to start embracing real science and stop bad mouthing butter. Now I’m not holding my breath for this to happen. Heck, the nutritionists interviewed about this new study don’t want you to think it’s alright to eat fat because of the risk of heart attacks.  Really!?!

It’s looking like the nutrition dogma of the 50+ years is starting to crumble. Thank you Gary Taubes!

Surviving on Soup & Eggs

Well after trying some comfort food, I'm back to eating lukewarm soup and scrambled eggs. Strep Throat has sidelined me the week.

Well after trying some comfort food, the pain from the strep throat drove me back to eating lukewarm soup and scrambled eggs. Image courtesy of cuteimage and FreeDigitalPhotos.net.

Ugh! Swallowing is still very painful. It takes about 7 days for strep throat to go away once you start the antibiotics. So I have a few more days of this crud left. I can only eat soup and scrambled eggs (lots of eggs!) somewhat pain-free. I’m staying away from juices and only drinking water, herbal tea (lukewarm) and herbal ice tea. I made the mistake of drinking my carbonated water on day one — that hurt something fierce.

I have no idea how many carbs I’m taking in during my illness. I’m not tracking anything. Since my food is limited to what doesn’t hurt going down, I saw no point of tracking. A girl’s gotta eat and anything soft and cool on the back of my throat is all that matters.

I did enjoy 2 comfort foods over the weekend — frozen custard and pizza.  Actually, “enjoy” isn’t the right word.  Yes, the foods lit up my taste buds, but my throat was having none of that joy.  Friday night my husband picked up 2 pints of frozen custard — chocolate and low-carb vanilla. Initially the frozen custard felt great on my throat, but by the time Sunday rolled around, it felt like broken glass.

The pizza was just a bad idea but my mind told me I needed comfort food while I’m sick. Even though I let my slices cool significantly before eating, the sauce felt like molten lava on the back of my throat. It took about 45 minutes just to eat 2 slices.

So now I’m back to eggs and soup.

As for working out, I have no wish to hit the gym anytime soon.  I still have a fever and until that breaks, I’m not going anywhere. If this clears up by Friday, I may hit the spin room on the weekend for a light workout.

Otherwise, this week I’m on a break.

Weekly Weigh-In: Goodbye Plateau, Hello Antibiotics!

Success! Down 5.4 lbs. this week and finally broke free of the plateau.

Success! Down 5.4 lbs. this week and finally broke free of the plateau.

I woke up this morning with a throbbing ear and a sore throat (just the left side) and promptly called my doctor’s office to see if I could get checked out today. The last thing I wanted was an ear infection over the weekend with no meds. After scheduling the appointment I decided to weigh-in today. If I have to eat carb heavy soups this weekend, I might as well weigh myself before the damage is done.

Good move! I lost 5.4 pounds this week and that puts my total weight loss at 110 pounds. Eating 20g of carbs a day paid off and kicked that plateau to the curb.

“Wow! That Throat’s A Hot Mess”
After weighing in, I headed straight to my doctor’s office. Now I’ve felt tired for the last couple of days and had a very runny nose for a few weeks. I naturally assumed I was fighting a cold and starting to lose the battle. But this morning the pain in my ear and throat was intense.

5K Training: Back To Square One

This week I tested my knee with some running. Nothing major. I broke out my Easy 5K app and started at the beginning. All the training I did before my knee injury is out the window. The name of the game is graded return – working below my break point, resting a day between runs and only increasing intensity when it’s comfortable.

Sometimes Your Diet Isn’t The Only Thing That Needs Shaking Up

No I didn't go for the pigtail look. I'm waiting for Jenny to apply the color to get rid of the grays.

No I didn’t go for the pigtail look. I’m waiting for Jenny to apply the color to get rid of the grays.

I’ve rededicated myself to making better food choices and cut my daily carb count to 20g. But when I woke up yesterday something else needed to change. I have a new attitude, but I wasn’t feeling it on the outside.  Maybe it was all that gray hair.

I headed over to the salon for some much-needed color. After my fab hairstylist Jenny got rid of my grays she asked if I wanted to trim up my hair just a little. I tilted my head, squinted my eyes as I looked in the mirror and slowly said “yeaaaaahhhhhh.”

Do’h! Clearly it wasn’t the gray hairs. I needed something else. Jenny could tell could tell it was time for a new do.

Problem was I really didn’t know what to do. I put absolutely no thought into it. I just needed something…sassy!

Lost 3.5 Inches Since January

Saturday was the mid-point check-in for the 2014 Gold’s Gym Challenge. It was time for the Challenge Gods to take a look at my progress. Considering my plateau, the results are pretty awesome. Since January 6 I lost 18.9 pounds and 3.5 inches.

march meassurements

I’ve noticed that my jeans are very loose these days. Dropping 2.5 inches off my waist and hips will do that. I’m not quite ready for a smaller size just yet, but maybe by the end of the challenge.
