12-Week Fitness Challenge Ends; Lost 9.5 inches since January!

Saturday was my last weigh in for the Gold’s Gym 2014 Challenge and the total results are pretty awesome. I’ve lost 2% of my body fat and 9.2% of my total body weight. The big bonus — I’ve lost 9.5 off my waist and hips. Sweet!

My 12-Week Challenge Results
I started the challenge weighing 239 and ended up at 217. Great overall, but my weight loss slowed considerably during the last 6 weeks of the challenge. I was down just a few pounds. The 5 pound increase over the last couple of weeks really hurt. Lack of tracking was a big part of that slowed weight loss. Read More

Weekly Weigh-In: Down 3 Pounds

I lost 3 pounds this week. I'm back to where I was before the strep throat!

I lost 3 pounds this week. I’m back to where I was before the strep throat!

Hot damn! I dropped 3 pounds this week and officially lost the weight I gained during my strep throat. Phew! With the injuries, illnesses and frickin’ snow out-of-the-way, it feels like I can finally see daylight.

Chances of me reaching my short-term goal of weighing under 200 pounds by the end of April are looking pretty slim. It’s looking like the end of May is more realistic. As long as I get there I’ll take it.

Food wise, I stuck to eating 25g of carbs a day. I did have one little slip (or should I say sip). Yes, I broke Lent with a glass (or two) of wine. Sigh…but on the bright side, wine is low carb. Anyway, I’m back on the wagon and will not drink for the rest of Lent.

In addition to eating healthy, I kicked my workout schedule up a notch. With all the weight lifting, biking, walking, running, yoga classes and my burpee challenge, I worked out a total of 11 hours this week. Awesome!

This week I’m adding an extra challenge to my workout schedule – my first day hike this year. I’ve got my sights set on Manassas National Battlefield Park. The park has 40+ miles of hiking trails and my goal is to cover 11.5 miles.

Last week I had my annual physical and, unlike most people, I actually looked forward to it. I mean, who doesn’t like sitting on a tissue-covered examining table wearing a very large paper towel opened in the back? As fun as that sounds (and it does sound fun), I didn’t always feel that way.

When I went in for my first-ever physical, in 2012, I wasn’t the same tissue-sitting-lovin’, paper-towel-with-holes-wearin’, physical-takin’ aficionado I am today. I knew I wasn’t in perfect health, and I expected the usual from my doctor: lose weight, get more exercise, been there done that, please pass the ketchup. You know, like what doctors say to normal people.  Right?

Wrong. Unfortunately for me, I got what can only be described as a punch in the gut. I was well on my way to a heart attack and to becoming a diabetic. Only time would tell which would hit first if I didn’t change my life.

March Cardio Workouts – Walked To West Virginia

March was a tough month workout wise. Thanks to horrible weather and illness, I made it past Lewisburg, WV in my Virtual Walk to Denver.

March was a tough month workout wise. Thanks to horrible weather and illness, I made it past Lewisburg, WV in my Virtual Walk to Denver.

March is over and it’s time to total my cardio miles to see how far I’ve virtually traveled. I biked, ran and walked a total of 68.93 miles over 11 days. That’s a little below my 72 mile monthly average. But considering all the snow, ice, bitter cold temps and 10 days of strep throat, it’s not too shabby.

Be Your Own Health Hero

hero quoteI’m a little late posting this (darn strep throat!). I was contacted by the American Recall Center and asked to write about my health hero — that person in my life that inspires me to lose weight. That was a little tough for me, as I have lots of support from friends and family.

Two Top Contenders
At first, the honor went to my good friend Elizabeth, my biggest cheerleader for the last 2 years. She’s always let me bend her ear about major food failures and workout successes. Also, she’s undergoing her own fitness and health journey, so it was easy to share my goals and concerns with her. She’s also working overtime to get me to do a Disney half marathon with her (need to get that 5K under my belt first). And though she lives on the opposite coast, she’s always ready with much-needed sage advice via a constant stream of motivational texting.

Of course, my husband comes to mind, too. When I’d hit my really low point two years ago this month (March 23rd, to be exact), he gave me the strength to do what needed to be done – walk away from a nice salary and focus on my health and happiness. He loves the blog and serves as editor and technical fickser (heh). There are times he knows what I’m thinking before I voice it, like when he suggested I work with a trainer and take up body-building. Like Elizabeth, he offers sage advice and bucks me up when I hit those inevitable low points in my journey.

me before after newBut My Biggest Health Hero Is…
I think the real hero in my weight loss tale is…me.

All the support I get from family and friends is great, but at the end of the day I’m the one who has to make smart, healthy choices. No one can do that for me, and sometimes it seems like the whole world is conspiring to derail my progress. Bad food is cheap. Fast food is fast and cheap, and sometimes a girl wants milk and cookies and scary movies. By taking control and putting my health first, I’ve decided to be the low-carb hero of an inspiring documentary called “Dot to Trot”. No more sitting on the sidelines. My blog’s tagline says it all: The world is expanding as my butt is shrinking!

I’ve dieted, on and off, for 25 years without success. Talk about horror stories! Two years ago I had a physical so awful it shook me to my core. There, in that little doctor’s room, sitting on a paper blanket thing a mere two years from diabetes and eventually heart disease, a fire was lit under my butt (and it hasn’t gone out). I didn’t realize it then, but I’d decided to rewrite my story: remastered with hilarious bloopers, years of extra footage, director commentary (the blog), and soon to be re-released in stunning 3D.

I took control and made my health and happiness my top priority. I made a lot of changes – some small (going to bed on time, starting a blog), some outright drastic (quitting my job, going low carb). I changed my life for me this time: for my health first and appearance second, but I’m loving how I look!

My biggest change: realizing a healthy lifestyle stops being a dream if I actually live healthily. Funny how that goes, huh?

By taking control, my goals are no longer something I hope to reach one day. They’re actually within my grasp.

What are my goals? Gosh, so much…and none of them come in a greasy bag with a side of fries.

Am I Eating Too Much Protein?

I decided to investigate if I'm overdoing it on the protein front. Turns out my body is much smarter than I realized. Image courtesy of amenic 181 and FreeDigitalPhoto.net.

Last night I started reviewing my food logs in My Fitness Pal and noticed that my diet breaks down as 10% carbs, 30% protein and 60% fat. I’m eating low-carb, so that means my fat intake goes up to compensate for my cut in carbohydrates. That got me wondering if I’m eating too much or too little protein.

My diet is low-carb, high fat (LCHF). I’m averaging about 115g of protein a day. That daily average dipped in March (83g/day) but that’s mostly due to illness. Strangely, now that I feel better, my protein intake hasn’t bounced back up to 115g. As a result, I’m feeling hungry late at night and tired in the afternoons. Suspecting lack of protein was the culprit, I deal with my hunger by whipping up some late night scrambled eggs with hot sauce — yum!

Clearly, eating 115g of protein a day helps with the hunger. But is 115g a day the right amount of protein?

New Week, Sassy Attitude

Confession time. Besides feeling absolutely horrible last week, I worried about reverting back into the old me.  On earlier weight loss adventures, anytime I got sick my diet failed.  I’d quickly go back to my old, lazy, junk food eating self and gain my weight back and then some.

Turns out my fears were unfounded. I immediately went back to a low carb diet and I’m itching for today’s muscle workout and run.

What’s difference between the old and new me? Then I was on a diet. Today I’ve changed my lifestyle. I’ve spent the last 2 years building good habits.

Just like muscle memory, those habits kicked into high gear once I could actually eat without pain.

In fact, while resting in bed, I started thinking I need healthier options the next time I’m sick. Really?!? Who does that? Someone determined to lose the weight and live a healthy lifestyle, baby!

Finally I Can Eat Healthy Again

I’m feeling better than I was yesterday. The strep throat will be gone by this weekend. I’ve been completely low carb the last two days and can once again eating vegetables without the excruciating pain (sort of).

The infection did spread to my left ear and my jaw. So there are moments, like when I ate a celery stalk this morning, that I experience a slight stabbing pain. But that too is starting to fade.

My appetite isn’t quite back yet. For the last two days I’ve only ate breakfast and dinner. Mainly because I’m just not hungry…and my 5 hour power nap in the middle of the day.  Who knew strep throat was so exhausting?

Despite my lack of appetite I’m not looking forward to stepping on the scale this weekend. Other than scrambled eggs, I ate nothing I would consider healthy. That’s because only the high-carb stuff — bread and chicken noodle soup — didn’t hurt (as much) going down.

No doubt about it, strep throat is a temporary diet killer.

Weekly Weigh-In: Goodbye Plateau, Hello Antibiotics!

Success! Down 5.4 lbs. this week and finally broke free of the plateau.

Success! Down 5.4 lbs. this week and finally broke free of the plateau.

I woke up this morning with a throbbing ear and a sore throat (just the left side) and promptly called my doctor’s office to see if I could get checked out today. The last thing I wanted was an ear infection over the weekend with no meds. After scheduling the appointment I decided to weigh-in today. If I have to eat carb heavy soups this weekend, I might as well weigh myself before the damage is done.

Good move! I lost 5.4 pounds this week and that puts my total weight loss at 110 pounds. Eating 20g of carbs a day paid off and kicked that plateau to the curb.

“Wow! That Throat’s A Hot Mess”
After weighing in, I headed straight to my doctor’s office. Now I’ve felt tired for the last couple of days and had a very runny nose for a few weeks. I naturally assumed I was fighting a cold and starting to lose the battle. But this morning the pain in my ear and throat was intense.
