Nov. 9 Weekly Weigh-In: I Lost Nearly 3 Pounds

weekly weigh-in, weight loss, losing weight, weight watchers

I lost 2.8 pounds this week, bringing my total weight loss to just under 84 pounds.

I had a great week and it showed on the scale — I dropped 2.8 pounds!  That puts my total weight loss at 83.6 pounds.

Body Adjusting To New Routine
I don’t think it was the spinning class that caused the big drop. I expected a bigger dip during last week’s weigh-in. But thanks to sore muscles and working out before stepping on the scale, I retained a lot of water.

This week I recovered more quickly from my workouts and didn’t exercise before my Weight Watchers meeting. So I expected, and got, better numbers when I stepped on that scale this morning.

I noticed that my weight loss is more consistent since I started weight training 3 times a week. Prior to working with my trainer, I’d seesaw between losing a few ounces one week and nothing the next.

My body adjusted to my workout and diet. Another awful plateau was around the corner. Thankfully the weight training gave my body the jump-start it needed to let go of the fat.

Reaching My Year-End Goal
I set a 3-month goal of dropping 19.5 pounds by December 31. As of today I’m 5.6 pounds closer. That gives me 7 weeks to reach my goal. It’s a tall order with the holiday’s coming up.  But I’m up for the challenge.

Nov. 2 Weekly Weigh-In: Down 1 Pound

weight loss, weekly weigh-in

Dropped 1 pound this week. Need to lose 16.7 lbs. by Dec. 31 to hit my 30% weight loss goal. Fingers crossed!

I’m down a pound this week! That brings my total weight loss to 81 lbs. And with this week’s loss, I now need to lose 16.7 lbs. to hit my 30% weight loss goal by December 31st.

Considering the average weekly weight loss is up to 2 lbs., 16 lbs. is tall order since I’d need to drop the max weight each week for the next 8 weeks...hmmmmm.

I’m game!

Too Busy To Weigh-In? Poppycock!
The last time I officially weighed in was Oct. 12.  Yikes! Between the 5Ks and family trips, this is the first weekend in weeks with no plans.

I can’t believe I let two weeks slide without going to Weight Watchers. I really hate missing my weekly meetings. It’s always good to check in and see how I’m doing. The accountability keeps me motivated. Plus, the energy from the meetings give me the kick-start I need for the week.

Although my weekend dance card fills up quickly, I need to work harder to keep my Saturday morning date with the scale.

November Healthy Challenge: Eating Fish

fish hater eating fish, weight loss and healthy eating

My first official health challenge – eating fish. I kick it off with a garlic-pepper lime cod recipe.

In my every expanding quest to lose weight by eating healthy, I’ve designated November as Fish Month.  That’s right, I’m actually going to eat more fish fish once a week.

A silly challenge you say? Not to someone who hates fish.

The smell…the fishy taste…the texture…Yuck! Anything that smelly when cooked is something I avoid, like Chitlins.

But now am older and wiser.  I realize I haven’t given our aquatic friends a fair shake.  Plus I’m missing out on a great source of omega 3 and protein.

So in November, once a week, I’m preparing a fish dinner.  My husband, a seafood lover, is super excited.  Since I do 99% of the cooking, he rarely eats fish.

Starting With White Fish
Our local fishmonger recommends I start with mild tasting white fish like mahi-mahi or tilapia before trying a fish with a stronger flavor like salmon.

Since I don’t know how to cook fish, this challenge is more than just an eating adventure.  So this weekend I’ll spend some time researching recipes. My goal is to keep it simple yet flavorful.

Last night I got a jump-start on the challenge. I picked up a pound of cod and whipped up a simple garlic-pepper lime fish dish.  I think I added too much garlic – mostly out of fear of that fishy taste, which didn’t exist.

Overall, I loved it. Sure there was too much garlic, but the lime and jalapeño added a nice touch. As for texture, the fish was firm not mushy, another bonus.  Chalk this dish up as a win. Now just 4 more fish meals to go.

Directions

  • Place fish on oiled broiling pan

Weight Loss Shows Inspire And Frustrate Me

My new favorite weight loss show - Heavy. It takes an honest approach to losing weight. I just wish it spent a little more time on nutrition.

I’m done watching Heavy. Now I need a new show to help give me that little push to keep going. Will My 600-LB Life or The Biggest Loser give me my fix?

I just finished watching the first season of Heavy and now I’m looking for another show to get me pumped about eating right and working out. I’ve got two options – My 600-lb Life and The Biggest Loser.

Like Heavy, My 600-lb Life is shot documentary-style. It focuses on people who undergone bypass surgery to lose weight. The camera crew follows them around for 7 years.

I’m curious to see if this one gets more into the nutrition side of things. If you spend 7 years following a person dealing with obesity, you think what that person eats might be of significance.

While I enjoy the documentary format of a show like Heavy, I can’t help but think people who’ve never been fat make these shows.  They almost never focus on nutrition.

Note to these TV shows producers: What you eat is 80% of the battle.

If food or nutrition isn’t interesting visually, how the heck do you explain the success of The Food Network?  Not one show, but a whole frickin’ network dedicated to food. Hell, even Hungry Girl has a healthy eating show on The Food Network.

As for The Biggest Loser I’ve never seen it, but I do own the yoga DVD.

I’m a little skeptical about the show. I know it’s a contest with a huge marketing machine behind it (hence my DVD!). That’s about it. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m a marketer, so I like the idea of a huge marketing machine.  But this topic hits close to home so I’m leery of a weight loss competition via reality TV.

I watch shows like Heavy not to see the train wreck that is people’s lives, but to feel inspired. Also, I actually want to learn something. I’m just not sure what I’ll get out of watching The Biggest Loser. But I think I need to watch it at least once before writing it off.

Down 3 Ring Sizes!

weight loss and ring size

To big to rule them all! My wedding and engagement rings sit in a jewelry box, too big to wear.

Jewelry is on my mind lately. Due to the weight loss, I can’t wear my rings, including my wedding or engagement rings. Worse, I’m unable to re-size my wedding band or engagement ring. The gems will pop right out.  Which means a new ring (hooray!). But since I’m still losing weight, I’m waiting until I reach my goal weight (boo!).  So hopefully in another year (sigh!).

However, I’m toying with getting a simple band in the meantime. I hate going about without a wedding ring. And let’s face it, a year is a long time to go without.

So Saturday I found myself in a jewelry store drooling standing in front of the case with my precious the pretty rings.

The sales lady asked if I wanted to look at a particular ring. “No, just looking.”

Then it struck me: I don’t even know what size I wear anymore. My ring finger was a size 10-1/2.  So I asked if she could measure my finger.

Hot damn! I’m now a 7-1/2.

It’s amazing where your body loses weight.

Counting (Weight Loss) Chickens Before They’re Hatched

weight loss, weekly weigh in

I’m down a pound this week. Total weight loss = 79.8 lbs. I only have 16.7 lbs. to go to hit my 3-month weight loss goal.

Today’s weigh-in day and I’m down a pound this week. Great news, right?

If only I hadn’t stepped on that scale Wednesday morning. The scale showed me a 2.6 lbs. loss. Ugh!

This is why I don’t like stepping on the scale midweek. Your weight fluctuates daily. I stepped on the scale after a lot of exercise and before lunch. That 2.6 lbs. loss was a mirage.

Normally I’m over the moon with a 1 lbs. loss. But right after I stepped off the scale this morning, I started second-guessing everything.

After 5 minutes of thinking about my every move this past week, I realized my only mistake was Wednesday morning.

No more unofficial weigh-ins. I’m sticking to Saturday mornings.

Taking A New “After” Photo

weight loss before and after photo

Down 82 lbs.! I can’t believe I weighed more than 300 lbs. Look for more “after” photos as I continue on my weight loss journey.

I cheated this morning. For some reason, I stepped on the scale. I never weigh myself midweek or use my scale. I always face the scale at a Weight Watchers meeting. And only on the weekend.

After yesterday’s 2 hour workout, I woke up feeling like a kid on Christmas morning. I needed to go open my presents now.

So I stepped on the scale and saw I lost 2.6 lbs. so far this week. If that holds (or improves) by weigh-in day, then that means I’ve lost 25% of my original body weight.

I’m cautiously optimistic.

Oh, hell I’m ecstatic!  So much so I decided it’s time for another “after” picture. My husband snapped my  last “after” photo 7 months ago when I weighed 260 lbs. Unofficially as of this morning I’m 243.6 – a loss of 16.4 lbs since that first “after” photo. Nice!

Looking at the March and October photos, I can see a slight difference in my torso. I’ll love documenting the weight loss with pictures. Photos every 6 seems about right. Next time I’ll break out the good camera, not the one on my iPhone.

Fingers crossed that those numbers either hold or improve by this weekend for the real weigh-in.

Slaying The Movie Popcorn Monster

My favorite snack is a low carb diet killer. I successfully passed the concession stand and went straight to my seat at the movies last night. Image courtesy of Kromkrathog and FreeDigitalPhotos.net.

While at the movies last night, I actually did not give in to my inner popcorn demon. Many times my husband asked if I wanted any popcorn. And every time I said “no.” Starting with the weight loss, my weekend was going great – no mishaps with the diet – so why mess it up with hot, crunchy, over-buttered theater popcorn (oh, I’m starting to drool).

Popcorn is my one great weakness. I love it so and I cannot stop at one portion. Nope, once it touches my lips I’m driven to keep going.  While going low carb, I’ve tried to avoid it. I purged my pantries of the stuff. It is not allowed in the house.

But going to the movies…ugh! It is the one monkey I can’t get off my back – until now.

I’ll admit, I did waver. I thought a small bag wouldn’t hurt. But when I opened my mouth to give in, I could only say “just water.”

Something in my brain kicked in right in time. Maybe it’s the jacked up prices, I’ve conditioned myself to only eat when hungry, or it’s my new dedication to getting the weight off…or it’s all of those things.

One of my weekly goals is to eat only 20g of carbs for 4 days this week. Why bust that goal at the start of the week with popcorn?

I’m much more focused with the weekly goals and I think about my food choices and not going on autopilot.

I made it through the film without popcorn. The world didn’t end and I didn’t crave the stuff.

Oh, I’m sure it helped that the film was amazingly awesome!
